My dear Eland Wood,
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY.
June 19, 1919.
At the last meeting of the Library Committee held on Tuesday
June 17, I read your letter resigning your post as Senior Library
Assistant from the end of September 1919. I explained to the Com-
mittee that shortly before your return here, when consulted by
another English University as to the appointment of a Chief Librarian
I had submitted your name as the most suitable candidate, but that
after giving the matter due consideration you had determined to carry
out your long-cherished project of proceeding to China, in order to
study the language and the people.
General regret was expressed by the members present, and the
following resolution was passed:
"Agreed that the Library Committee desire to resord
their high appreciation of the services of Mr. D.
Eland Wood, and to wish him every success in his
future career."
In assosiating myself with this expression of goodwill, I must
add my own deep sense of the loss of such a devoted colleague and
friend. You have been with us for nearly ten years. Your high
principle, loyalty and courtesy have won the respect of all, but of
none more than myself. You have proved yourself here, as in your
devoted services at the Front, a man to admire and trust, and your
loss to the University and its Library can hardly be replaced. Yet
I would prefer to turn from this, perhaps selfish, point of view, and
rather see in the qualities you have already made us know an augury
of success in the new eastern field upon which you are now adventuring ·
